Tufting Berlin / CL Studio is an independent creative studio founded by artists Sungeun Claire Choi and Wonek Lee, both trained in Photography and Media Installation at HFBK Hamburg. Since discovering tufting in 2021, each has integrated the medium into their distinct practices. Sungeun Claire Choi uses tufting to create layered, textured textile compositions in her Painting Sketch series. Her work evokes organic structures resembling secret gardens—spaces of quiet growth and resistance against the pace of modern, technological life. Wonek Lee contrasts digital media’s cold intangibility with the tactile warmth of tufting. By merging these opposites in installations, he explores the tension and harmony between the immaterial digital and material handmade, rethinking notions of presence and perception. Together, they demonstrate tufting’s potential as both artistic medium and conceptual bridge, connecting the visual and tactile, digital and human dimensions of contemporary art.
